Going to D.C. soon?
Then read this article on Tyler Green’s art blog before going to the newly-installed American galleries in the National Gallery of Art. Out of 169 works, it seems that 167 were made by white men. Yes, in the National Gallery. There is one work by a white woman, one by a black man.
Which raises the issue for Crystal Bridges. Of the known works in the collection, 33 are by white guys, one...
And now for some news from New York
This project is so weird on so many fronts it’s hard to know where to begin. But for all you architecture folks out there, check out culturegrrl’s post on the Nouvel Tower proposed for 53rd Street, next to the Museum of Modern Art.
Whitehouse, Kaneko shows
I’ve been out of town and haven’t had time to post this link to my artnotes column in the Arkansas Times last week. It’s a review of the Jun Kaneko and Ben Whitehouse exhibits at the Arkansas Arts Center. Exceptional shows. Above: “March,” a calendar of art by Whitehouse.
To read more about Kaneko, go here to listen to what Brad Cushman, UALR curator, has to say in...
Blog with a View
Terry Wright, who teaches creative writing at UCA and lives in Little Rock, reminds me that he has an art blog featuring his fractal works and poetry. The Museum of Computer Art has recognized his blog as a “distinguished art site”; he also has a piece in the traveling Works on Paper sponsored by the Arkansas Arts Council. His work above: “Bucky Katt,” a reference to the...
What is an American art gallery?
Tyler Green, on his art blog, notes the rise in interest in American art as seen in new wings at four institutions — the Met, the Nelson-Atkins (which has a couple of Crystal Bridges paintings on loan), the Huntington and the National Gallery — and links to an article about the Huntington’s work. How valuable is the collection? Do you buy stuff on the cheap because it’s got...
ESSA gets an url
Eleanor Lux, the great fiber and bead artists in Eureka, sends a notice that the Eureka Springs School of the Arts has started a blog. And there I found reference to one of my favorite ceramists, or ceramicists, whichever you prefer: Laurie Spencer. Spencer had a one-woman show years ago at the Decorative Arts Museum of her giant whistles, inspired by South American gourd and water whistles. The...

Fox reports on The Artery
The Eureka Springs’ City Council’s decision to take over The Artery public art project draws the attention of Fox News.
Here’s the question: Is there any good “public art,” that is art chosen by committee that thinks it knows what’s best for the public to see?
Giant clothespins and shuttlecocks work for me. The sphincter that once stood at the corner of...
